The Town is situated in the heart of the Snowdonia Mountains and was once central to the mines of the slate trade. The trade more or less disintegrated in the early 20th century. Now the towns economy is completely dependent on the tourist trade.
Blaenau Ffestiniogg has many attractions to offer visitors, including the Ffestiniogg Railway and Llechwedd Slate Caverns, the latter being a slate mine from the past open to tourists.
In Llechwedd visitors can go on the original slate trains used in 1852 and then through the tunnels. Designed in 1846, the electric and battery powered train takes visitors into the mountain and through original mine works dating from Victorian times.
